A brief history of reflexology

Reflexology is a therapy that dates back thousands of years, traced to the ancient civilisations of Egypt, India and China. The oldest record is from 2330 BC. This was a painting found in the tomb of an Egyptian physician showing patients receiving treatments on their hands and feet.

The more modern form of reflexology was practised in America in the early 20th century by Dr William Fitzgerald, an ear, nose and throat surgeon. He was the founder of Zone Therapy which worked on the theory that the body was divided into 10 longitudinal zones, with each toe defining a zone that went up through the body and by working a zone in the foot you were actually working the whole body zone.

Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist in the 1930’s, further developed this. She mapped the organs and glands of the body on to reflex points on the feet and hands and so the map of the entire body on the feet was developed.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive therapy in which pressure is applied to the reflex points on the feet or hand aiming to bring those areas back to balance. It is a holistic treatment helping to rebalance the whole person – body, mind and spirit.

Reflexology is not intended to replace conventional medicine, but works really well alongside it. If you are concerned about your health, please always consult a GP first.

What to expect in a reflexology treatment?

I offer treatments in the comfort of your own home in Sevenoaks, Bromley and the surrounding areas and also at Nizels Wellbeing Hub at Nizels Golf and Country Club in Hildenborough.

Before your first appointment I will ask you to complete and submit the Personal Details and Consultation forms on the website, so that I can check for any contra-indications and advise/prepare accordingly for your treatment.

The appointment is for 1 hour. You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and you will be made comfortable on the Lafuma reclining chair.

The relaxing treatment begins….I will massage your feet with an organic cream and then work the reflex points by applying pressure to them. We can chat about the treatment after and I will answer any questions you may have.

Geraldine is the absolute best reflexologist that I’ve ever known. I have had reflexology by lots of different people but never anywhere up to the standards of Geraldine’s great skills.

I would never go anywhere else and always feel more balanced and rejuvenated afterwards.
